Five days after Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State assented to the Bill which outlaws land-grabbing in Lagos, more than 500 petitions have been received by the Special Task Force against land grabbers, it was learnt.
The file of petitions received from land owners and property developers is expected to grow within the week as the Task Force gets down to business.
The law which was greeted with excitement by stakeholders prescribes 10-year jail term for land grabbers popularly called Omo Onile (son of land owner) in local parlance. It is now an infringement of the law for the Omo Oniles to solicit money from builders and developers before they are allowed to work on their lands.
Alternate Chairman of the Task Force, Mr. Akinjide Bakare disclosed at the weekend that the 500 petitions were received from people who are having issues with their landed properties.
Bakare who spoke in an interview monitored on a Channel TV programme in Lagos also stressed that the state government is resolute in bringing an end to the menace of land grabbers who forcefully enter and take over possession of other people’s party.
