Young Super Eagles impressed against Ukraine- Lawal

A former international, Garba Lawal yesterday expressed satisfaction with the performance of the Super Eagles who drew 2-2 with Ukraine on Tuesday at the Dnipro Arena.

Although the young squad assembled by Gernot Rohr following the withdrawal of some key players from the international friendly shot into the lead early in the match, loss of concentration and what many have termed inexperience cost them victory as their opponents crawled back to level scores.

Speaking to Daily Trust, the former Roda JC of Holland star said he was particularly impressed by the young strikers’ show of pace in the final third.

According to him, the Super Eagles made counter-attacks that proved to be very dangerous.

He said “I like the way we played in the final third. We were very dangerous anytime we caught Ukraine on counter attack.

“The only thing our forward players need to do is to be very clinical. They must utilize their chances.

“Although Ukraine is also a good side, if we were more clinical, maybe the game would have ended 5-1 in our favour.”

The coach of Real Stars of Kaduna, therefore, said part of the problem of the team was inexperience.

He said with more crack international matches, the young Eagles would become more experienced and produce good results in future.

“Sometimes it is lack of experience. At times, they released the ball too quickly. Sometimes you hold on a bit to play your team mate into position.

“I like the fact that the team is built around young boys who have a bright future ahead of them.

“More of such big international matches will make them better players,” he noted.
