You need to get physically active, and here’s why

Exercise staves off stroke, which kills nearly 100,000 each year

One in four adults around the world is physically inactive, and their health could be in danger, a new report suggests.
With more than a quarter of adults around the world not getting enough physical activity, that’s more than 1.4 billion adults at “risk of developing or exacerbating diseases linked to inactivity,” according to the study published in the Lancet.
The World Health Organisation says regular physical inactivity increases people’s risk of poor health, including cardiovascular disease, several types of cancer and diabetes, falls, as well as mental health conditions.
The study by four WHO experts pooled data from population-based surveys reporting the prevalence of insufficient activity across 168 countries and spanning nearly 2 million people.
The data on physical inactivity updates previous levels found in 2008 and show the global level of inactivity in adults remains largely unchanged since 2001.
Even though the study found one in four adults physically inactive, the figure is as high as one in three in some countries.
Generally, women were less active than men, a difference of 8% between both sexes at global level.
The prevalence of physical activity in high-income counties is 37%, compared with 26% in middle-income countries. Low-income countries come in at 16%.
A new Global Action Plan on Physical Activity sets the target to reduce physical inactivity by 10% by 2025 and 15% by 2030.
But the data spanning 2001 to 2016 show the need for all countries to increase the priority given to national and sub-national actions to provide the environments that support physical activity and increase the opportunities for people of all ages and abilities, to be active every day, said the WHO.
In 2016, the highest levels of physical inactivity were found in women in Latin America and the Caribbean, south Asia and in high-income Western countries.
In men, the lowest levels of activity were found in Oceania, east and southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa.
