Yola residents protest police killing of student

Their demonstration over the death of the student who had been identified as 18-year-old Ismail Tukur forced the suspension of classes at the school, while police had to use teargas to disperse the demonstrators.

Police in the area claimed that the late student was arrested in connection with drugs dealing, but his parents and classmates gave a conflicting account of the incident.

According to the students Tukur was tortured in the cell before he was later taken to hospital where he gave up.

A large deployment of police in the community spent the whole day trying to disperse the irate residents along several sections of Yola town.

“As soon as police dispersed them, they regrouped and even threatened to set Damare police station ablaze,” a resident said.

The District Head of Yola and Durbin Adamawa, Alhaji Sa’adu Bawuro who came to the scene appealed for a speedy investigations into the incident.

When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Altine Daniel said investigations into the incident had commenced.
