Would you d.e.l.e.t.e your social media account to save your relationship?

A woman lies on her bed, facing the wall with her phone in her hands. The husband walks up to her and asks a question; but because she is deeply engrossed with what she’s doing, she doesn’t hear. The husband repeats himself and when she doesn’t respond, he gets angry, shouts at her and they start exchanging words.

In the heat of the ‘fight’, he demands that she either deletes all her social media accounts or she leaves his house. Now, the lady is faced with a dilemma: to delete all her social networking accounts and lose all her friends with whom she has reconnected after a long time or lose her home.

If you were in her shoes, what would you do? In other words, would you delete your social media account to save your relationship?

This question has been trending on social media for some months now, and LifeXtra sought to know what people felt about it. As usual, we got very interesting responses.

Lordtade Ladoye, a medical practitioner, said “Trivial matters such as social media shouldn’t cause rifts in my relationship.”

He asked “Like, if you are so insecure with my array of friends on social media and you think cutting me off social media is the way out, don’t I have friends outside social media that should also worry you?”

Alhassan A. Bala, a broadcast journalist, told LifeXtra “Well, for me as a journalist, it is impossible for anyone to ask me to delete my social media accounts, especially as they are contributing immensely in making the job easier and also reduce spending when communicating with friends and family that are outside the country. I may delete, for example, Instagram or Facebook but definitely not WhatsApp and Twitter.”

Onyinye Daniel, a staff of Merek Holdings, had a different opinion. She said “No, I can’t. I will choose social media over my spouse. It’s more like asking me to discontinue my relationship with people who matter to me, or trying to blind me from seeing the world or trying to limit the information I get which might be able to empower me.”

Abduljalil Umar, a graduate, stated “If contents of the Facebook account contradict the set family values, I will not hesitate to delete it because family comes first before any Facebook account. Facebook is not more than a modern company keeper with strangers. Marriage is the home of realities.”

Responding with an emphatic No, Ajibade Gabriel told LifeXtra what his reasons were. He said “I won’t delete my social media account(s) if my spouse asks me to because God said love your neighbour as yourself not more than yourself. She doesn’t have the authority and audacity to say so, no matter what I’m running on my account.”

He added, “It might have taken me a very long time and tedious effort to build the so-called social account. And the social media accounts are mine not hers.”

“I’ll lose so many friends, relatives, business partners, and even enemies.”
