Women protest over Enugu killings

A coalition of 13 women civil society and faith-based organizations in the South East zone yesterday held a peaceful protest over the recent killings in Nimbo, Uzouwani Council of Enugu State by suspected herdsmen.
Suspected herdsmen had invaded Ukpabi Nimbo, Uzouwani and killed several natives while destroying property worth millions of naira. Scores who sustained injuries are still being treated in various hospitals in the state.  Since the incident, economic and other activities in the area are yet to be restored as residents who fled for safety  have not returned.
Wearing mainly black clothes and brandishing placards with various inscriptions, the protesters marched from Okpara Square to the Enugu Government House and Enugu House of Assembly.
Reaching the gates of the Government House where they were received by the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the protesting women decried the killings and raping of wives and daughters as well as abducting and maiming other people.
The widows  lamented that they had nowhere to go as they didn’t feel secure returning to their Nimbo  homes.
Governor Ugwuanyi told the women that he was determined to do everything to bring succour to the victims and the bereaved while ensuring that peace was maintained and there are no more attacks.
