The Ondo State Police Command announced, yesterday, it was on the hunt for a woman who allegedly tortured her daughter to death and escaped with her corpse from the Ondo State University Teaching Hospital, Akure Annex.
The Command’s spokesman, Mr Femi Joseph, told journalists yesterday that efforts were on to arrest the woman to enable the police know the exact details of the incident.
The woman, whose identity the police were yet to ascertain, was said to have rushed her four-year-old daughter to the hospital for treatment on Wednesday night, with suspected horse whip marks visible on the girl’s body.
A staff member of the hospital, who wouldn’t disclose her identity, said the woman, however, bolted with the girl’s corpse immediately she was told her daughter was dead already.
She said, “The woman brought in the girl to the hospital’s children’s emergency ward for treatment. It was a case of child abuse as there were serious marks of beating all over her body. By the time the doctor on duty could attend to her, it was discovered the woman even brought the child in dead.
“The doctor told the mother so. Before you knew it, the woman had grabbed the girl and run away from the hospital facility.”
One of the doctors on duty when the incident occurred, who also pleaded anonymity, confirmed the incident, noting that the child was brought in dead by the mother.
“Immediately the woman brought in the child to the hospital, we tried to resuscitate her but there was no life in her. And before we knew it, she had grabbed the corpse run out of the hospital,” the doctor said.
Also confirming the incident, the hospital’s Administrative Secretary, Dayo Owoseni, said he heard about the incident the following morning.
“We have called on the doctor on duty to come over and explain what happened to us. The Chief Medical Director of the hospital is not around and the remaining top staff members are in an emergency meeting on the issue,” he said.
The police PRO said there was no proper record of the case registered at the hospital, but efforts were on to track the woman.
