The recently passed Police Trust Fund Bill would help in checkmating the activities of bandits in parts of the country better equipment for the police, Sen Abu Ibrahim (APC, Katsina) has said.
Ibrahim, who was the chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs and sponsor of an aspect of the bill, said President Muhammadu Buhari should waste no time in signing the bill into law so that certain security challenges in the country could be tackled head-on.
The senator said the Police Trust Fund Bill would bring a lot of improvement in the policing work in the work, noting that the Nigeria Police Force has been battling with lack of funds.
“It’s a combination of two bills: my own and another one, which came from the House. They merged the two into one so that they make it easier for passage. It’s a harmonised version.
“But what is good is that at least there will be better funding for the police now, which I have been fighting for some time. I hope the Executive will sign it into law. I’ll pray that President Buhari signs it into law immediately it gets to his table.
“I urge Mr President to sign it as quickly as possible because the police need it. At any rate, he had indicated that he would help the police by raising their pay. Obviously, the problem of police is beyond pay. They need funding in the critical area of arming themselves, training, other facilities and communications,” he said.
