Besides, 33 quoted companies during the week submitted their 2009 financial reports to the exchange.

Some of the companies were Fin bank, spring bank, Intercontinental bank, Nestle, Zenith bank, Ecobank Stanbic IBTC, Skye bank, Lafarge Cement Wapco Nigeria Plc, Scoa Nigeria Plc

A turnover of 1.8 billion shares worth N43.43 billion in 31,904 deals was recorded this week, in contrast to a total of 1.55 billion shares valued at N18.1 billion exchanged last week in 29,062 deals. There were no transactions in the Federal Government Development Stocks, State Government Bonds and Industrial Loans/Preference Stocks sectors.

The Banking subsector was the most active during the week (measured by turnover volume), with 1.04 billion shares worth N8.35 billion exchanged by investors in 18,599 deals. Volume in the Banking subsector was largely driven by activity in the shares of Zenith Bank Plc, First Bank of Nigeria Plc, Diamond Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc and UBA Plc. Trading in the shares of the five Banks accounted for 524.24 million shares, representing 50.6 per cent and 29.3 per cent of the subsector’s turnover and total volume traded during the week, respectively. The Insurance subsector, boosted by activity in the shares of Oasis Insurance Plc and AIICO Insurance Plc, followed on the week’s activity chart with a turnover of 248.94 million shares valued at N159 million in 1,129 deals. Last week, the Banking subsector led on the activity chart and was followed by the Insurance subsector. The NSE All-Share Index appreciated by 63.46 points or 0.3 per cent to close on Friday at 25,042.16 while the market capitalization of the 198 First -Tier equities increased to N7.98 trillion. However, the NSE-30 Index depreciated by 6.66 points or 0.63 per cent to close at 1,051.16.

In the previous week,  ASI and NSE-30 Index depreciated by 0.4 per cent and 0.33 per cent respectively. Two of the four sectorial indices appreciated during the week, same as in the preceding week. The NSE Food/Beverage Index appreciated by 13.10 points or 1.65 per cent to close at 805.81 and NSE Insurance Index appreciated by 2.02 points or 1.3 per cent to close at 162.40. However, the NSE Banking Index depreciated by 3.88 points or 1.03 per cent to close at 371.48 and the NSE Oil/Gas Index depreciated by 7.20 points or 2.11% to close at 334.08.

However, 39 stocks appreciated in price during the week, lower than the 40 of the preceding week. Two equities from the Food/Beverages & Tobacco subsector led on the gainers table. Nestle Nigeria Plc led on the gainers’ table with a gain of N12.05 to close at N400.00 per share while Flour Mills Nigeria Plc followed with a gain of N3.19 to close at N71.90 per share. Other price gainers’ include Ashaka Cement Plc  with N2.23,  Ecobank Transnational Inc N1.27, Conoil Plc – N1.19, PZ Cussons Nigeria Plc – N1.00, UAC of Nigeria Plc – N0.84, First City Monument Bank Plc – N0.76, Longman Nigeria Plc – N0.76 and Cadbury Nigeria Plc – N0.56

Similarly, 36 stocks depreciated in price during the week, lower than the 43 of the preceding week. Total Nigeria Plc led on the price losers’ table, dropping by N11.01 to close at N214.62 per share while Lafarge Cement WAPCO Nigeria Plc followed with a loss of N2.50 to close at N40.00 per share. Other price losers include Nigerian Breweries Plc with N1.91, Oando Plc – N1.80, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc – N1.00, May & Baker Nigeria Plc – N0.92, Nig. Aviation Handling Co. Plc – N0.78, Access Bank Plc – N0.72, UBA Plc – N0.65 and UACN Property Development Co. Plc – N0.50
