The Registrar, University of Calabar (UNICAL), Mr. Moses Abang, has confirmed the closure of the institution following a street protest by the students on Monday.
The students, who staged a peaceful protest, had complained about poor welfare services, erratic supply of safe water and poor sanitation, and accused the university’s management of being insensitive to their predicaments.
The authorities ordered all students staying on campus to vacate their hostels to enable them resolve all pending issues which brought about the students’ protest, Abang said, adding that the school will reopen on 30th October 2015 for full academic activities.
The mass protest had effectively disrupted academic activities in the school, and also blocked free flow of vehicular traffic which left traders, motorists and workers stranded. Vice Chancellor, Prof James Epoke later said “Though the students have the right to protest but it should not be hijacked by bad boys and miscreants. Their grievances would be looked into.”
