The incident, which occurred in the early hours of yesterday, happened along Odogbolu-Ijebu axis of the expressway, leaving several other passengers severely injured.
Sunday Trust gathered that the luxury bus, with registration number Lagos XL 285 AKD, was heading towards the eastern part of the country when it was stopped by the armed robbers The men of the underworld ordered the vehicle’s occupants to disembark and robbed them of their valuables, including goods and money.
The robbers, numbering about 20, ordered the victims to lie down on the ground beside the vehicle in order to be able to execute their operation unhindered. It was while the passengers were lying face down that an oncoming utility vehicle travelling at a high speed lost control and ran over the victims.
It was learnt that the driver of the utility vehicle, with registration number Edo XN 808 EEN, which was coming from the Sagamu axis, tried to escape the robbery attack when he lost control. The robbers later made away with their loots.
The state Police Commissioner, Hashim Argungu, in a telephone interview with Sunday Trust, confirmed that a total of 19 victims lost their lives in the accident and that their remains had been taken to the Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital (OOUTH), Sagamu.
But a hospital source claimed the figure was much higher. The luxury bus has the capacity to carry about 70 persons.
