Total lunar eclipse over Nigeria Monday – NASRDA

The National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), through its Centre for Basic Space Science (CBSS) says there will be a lunar eclipse over Nigeria on Monday, 21 January 2019.

The lunar eclipse which is expected to be total will begin in the evening of Sunday 20th January and end on Monday 21st January.

In a statement, Head, Media and Corporate Communications of NASRDA, Dr Felix Ale said, the eclipse will start across Nigeria in the early hours of Monday January 21 at approximately 3:36am, and reach its maximum at 6:12am, and then end at about 6:51am. The total duration of the occurrence over Nigeria will be 3 hours 15 minutes.

The Lunar eclipse is an event which occurs when the moon passes directly behind the earth and into its shadow. This can only be possible when the Sun, Earth and Moon are exactly or very closely aligned and having the earth between them.

Giving a breakdown of the occurrence of the lunar eclipse on Monday January 21 over Nigeria, the NASRDA spokesperson says at about 4:33am partial eclipse will occur, with a partial moon eclipse where the moon starts getting red.

At exactly 5:41am a maximum eclipse of the moon which may be visible to human sight will be witnessed while the moon eclipse is expected to end at 6:43am.

Around the globe, the eclipse is expected to take place across North and South America, Western Europe, North and West Africa and Asia. This will be the last total Lunar eclipse experienced until 2021.
