Those jostling for Borno gov’ship under APC

Over a dozen aspirants, all of them close to Governor Kashim Shettima, have indicated interest in succeeding him under the platform of the APC as he rounds up his second term next year.

Many of them had already purchased forms at the national headquarters of the party; even as the governor has maintained sealed lips as to who he would hand over to.

Senator Kaka Bashir Garbai who represents Borno Central in the Senate told our correspondent last night he had paid the stipulate fee and obtained the form.

Garbai, a former Commissioner for Local Government Affairs, is from the same senatorial district with Shettima, with sources saying the governor who had indicated interest in going to the Senate would switch role with Garbai.

Senator Abubakar Kyari, who represents Borno North in the Senate, has also confirmed that he had picked his form yesterday to vie for the governorship. He had served as commissioner in many ministries and chief of staff to Governor Shettima between 2011 and 2015 before going to the Senate.

Honourable Kaka Shehu, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Borno also confirmed that he had joined the race, saying he was optimistic of getting the ticket.

Another aspirant is Alhaji Mohammed Makinta who had served as commissioner during the tenure of late Mala Kachalla. He told the Daily Trust that he had purchased the form and would be ready to slug it out with others.

It was gathered that Ambassador Baba Ahmed Jidda, Nigeria’s Ambassador to China who served as SSG in Borno severally had reportedly paid for the APC form.

Similarly, former Deputy Governor Adamu Dibal who served under ex- Governor Ali Modu Sheriff, had told this reporter last night that he is also in the race and had obtained the form.

Dibal is from Borno South, the zone that is agitating for power shift.

Adamu Lawan Zaufanjimba, the Commissioner  for Works in the state had also obtained the form.

Also, Professor Babagana Zulum, the Commissioner for Resettlement in the state had also joined the race under the platform of the APC.

It was gathered that the Minister of State for Works,  Baba Shehuri had joined the long list of the APC gubernatorial aspirants.

In a telephone interview last night, Senator Abba Aji who indicated interest in succeeding Shettima, said he was yet to buy the form because he wanted the debate over direct and indirect primaries to be resolved.

Stakeholders of the APC in Borno had recently agreed to go for indirect primaries, a development that edged out many aspirants and their supporters who were not in the good books of the governor.

Sources said former Governor Sheriff and powerful forces in the presidency from Borno State are separately working to have their preferred aspirants as governor.

Governor Shettima had recently said they would not allow Abuja politicians to hijack the state; with sources saying the governor was reaching out to ensure that the best candidate emerged.
