Rummawa is a village shared by Ungogo and Gezawa local government
areas of Kano state. Though the village falls in-between the two local
governments, it lacks basic social amenities such as healthcare
facility, school, portable water and electricity.
A visit to the village by our reporter indicated that because of the
community need for education, they erected thatched classrooms for
their children to be educated.
The thatched school of three classrooms, Kano Chronicle observed, has
about 500 registered pupils: 160 for Early Education Child Care
(EECC), and 350 in Primary 1 and 2.
There are also about 15 voluntary teachers among members of the
community who regularly teach in the school.
The Chairman of Rummawa Community Development Association, Malam Aminu S. Baba, said the association had made several attempts to reach out
to relevant authorities to come to their aid but their efforts were
not successful.
“We have tabled our complaints at the local governments, we met our
state assembly members as well as our representatives at national
assembly, but all we have gotten were hollow promises. So we felt that
we have to do something for our children, that is why we came up with
the idea of erecting 3 thatched classrooms to enable our them attend
formal classes,” he lamented.
The Ward Head of the Area, Alhaji Muhammad Auwalu, told Kano Chronicle
that children of the area had to trek some kilometers to the nearest
school in the area.
“The closest primary school we have around, is in Sauna, a very long
distance for little ones among the children to cover. Because of
environmental problems, road to the school is severely eroded and
and that make it dangerous for our children to cross over especially
during rainy season,” he said.
Alhaji Auwalu added that the area, which has an estimated population
of 20,000 residents, was also lacking other social amenities such as
healthcare facilities, potable drinking water, roads and electricity.
