Today, new facts reveal that moringa helps to boost immunity; hence, it’s good for HIV patients. Mrs. Sarah Abagai, Head Dietetics Department at the National Hospital, Abuja puts it succinctly. “Moringa has helped our HIV patients. It is an immune booster. It fights diseases and increases the immunity (the body defence mechanism). So, HIV patients use it to fight those opportunistic infection related to their condition. So, with Zogala or Moringa, they are able to revamp their immunity what they call CD4 count. It turns around very dramatically.”
Health experts say Moringa leaf powder is the richest source of calcium from a plant material and Moringa leaf powder contains more calcium than that of milk and more iron than that of spinach. This helps in the formation of hemoglobin and myoglobin, which carry the oxygen in the blood and the muscle.
Iron also makes up part of many proteins and enzymes in the body and deficiencies of which leads to the weakening of the immune system. Moringa with more potassium content than that of banana assists in the regulation of the acid-base and water balance in the blood and the body tissues. It assists in protein synthesis from amino acids and in carbohydrate metabolism. It is necessary for the building of muscle and for normal body growth.
Moringa has approximately 46 antioxidants and is one of the most powerful sources of natural anti-oxidants. Anti-oxidants supply the free atoms needed by the human body and mitigates the effect of free radicals. Moringa leaves are rich in flavonoids, a class of anti-oxidants. Antioxidants play a major role in controlling the symptoms of aging process and improve the cardiovascular health. Additionally, Vitamin E, present in moringa, also functions as anti-oxidants. Researches confirm that the anti-oxidants deliver the desired result, if only taken with the combination of other essential vitamin and minerals, which makes health enthusiast to seek after Moringa. Moringa leaves and fruits are loaded with phytonutrients.
So, how can we tap from the many benefits of moringa. Abagai says “some people use it directly in food. Others use it in tea and pap, you can add it to any food that you want. What we get from it is the anti-bacteria factor. We are told that if you are going to give a 24 gram serving of moringa powder daily to a child, he is going to be accessing 42 per protein, 125 per cent calcium – good for the bones, 61per cent magnesium, 41 per cent potassium,71 per cent iron, 272 per cent of vitamin A . When you take one table spoon full, you will get 20 grams and you add a teaspoon to make it 25gram,” Abagai explains.
On what dosage will be appropriate for a HIV patient, she says it is dependent on the state of the patient. For instance if the child is emaciated, you may have to give it regularly until the immunity (CD4 count) improves.
It is good to note that every part of the moringa tree is medicinal. The seed cake is used to purify water like we use alum to purify water here. The dried seeds can be fried and eaten like groundnut. The pods can be eaten fresh as green beans. They can be cooked or eaten fresh. They are highly nutritious. The leaves also can be eaten fresh or cooked. You can add fresh moringa leaves into your vegetable salad.
Again, Abagai says because of the potassium and calcium content in moringa, the combination of that can help lower blood pressure.
And for women who suffer from nutritional deficiency at the time of pregnancy as well as breast feeding experts say six tablespoons of moringa leaf powder provides following nutrients: protein 21per cent, calcium 84 per cent, magnesium 54p er cent, potassium 22 per cent, iron 94 per cent, vitamin A: 143 per cent and vitamin C nine per cent.
