Teenager escapes mob action after failed burglary attempt

A 16-year-old boy narrowly escaped being lynched by a mob after allegedly breaking into a mechanic’s workshop in Awka, Anambra State, to steal motor spare parts.

The suspect was said to have attempted the theft along with his younger brother at the workshop located at Kwata Amikwo area of the state capital.

Daily Trust, however learnt that luck ran out on the duo when the elder was caught by the owner of the workshop, Paul Nwagulu, while the younger brother escaped.

Confessing to the crime, the suspect, a JSS 2 student of one of the secondary schools in the area, said he wanted to use the proceeds after selling the stolen spare parts to repair his spoilt phone.

He also confirmed that his accomplice, who is now at large, was his biological younger brother.

A resident of the area, identified as Vivian, alleged that the suspects were products of a broken home whose parents had since separated.

It was further learnt that the suspect, after receiving severe beating by neighbours and colleagues of the shop owners, was handed over to his mother who came pleading on his behalf, with a promise that such act would not repeat itself.
