At the last edition of the festival held in Port-Harcourt, Gombe State which could not win a single medal placed last on the medals table.
However, at the ongoing festival, Gombe State has in her kitty two bronze medals and one silver medal just as the team is expecting more medals to come in from the gymnastics event.
Speaking to Trustsports, Yarma expressed satisfaction with the performance of Team Gombe saying the athletes have not disappointed him.
NOMINATE AFRICAN OF THE YEAR 2019
He said even before the festival, he knew that Gombe State won’t repeat the dismal outing she recorded at the 17th edition of the National Sports Festival in Port-Harcourt.
According to him, the athletes enjoyed tremendous support from the government and were committed to bringing honour to the state.
He said even as the contingent won’t be going back to Gombe State with so many medals, he is not disappointed because he had seen so much hope in his athletes.
“I am very much satisfied with the performance of my athletes. We have not done badly considering what happened in Port-Harcourt. You will recall under the past dispensation, the state came last at the Garden City Games.
“This time, the athletes enjoyed so much motivation and support from His Excellency, Alhaji Ibrahim Dankwambo and they have to a large extent justified such support. In future, we would do better because what we have done so far is to lay a solid foundation.
“After the festival, we would go straight into talent hunting. We would keep those who have potentials for winning medals in future and then scout for more talented ones to replace the aging ones”.
Yarma also thanked the governor of the state for providing enough funding which he said made it possible for Team Gombe to rank among the best dressed contingent at the festival.
