The suspected leader of a kidnapping gang was shot dead while two police sergeants sustained bullet wounds as detectives attached to the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence Response Team (IRT) engaged the gang in a gun battle in Sapele, Delta State.
Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Moshood Jimoh, confirmed that detectives led by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Abba Kyari, were on a search and rescue mission for four British citizens abducted in Burutu area of Delta State by suspected members of the Niger Delta militants on October 13 based on the confessional statements of two of the suspected kidnappers earlier arrested.
The four Britons, a couple and two others were said to have been rendering humanitarian services in the area when they were abducted. The victims were believed to have been immediately taken away into the creeks by the militants.
Jimoh said when the policemen sustained gun wounds, “detectives around immediately responded and in the process gunned down the kidnapper who shot at the two policemen. They recovered the Barrette Pistol with him.”
Jimoh further stated that the body of the deceased kidnapper had been deposited at the morgue while the injured policemen are receiving treatment.
