Surveyors trained on modern contract models to ease business

The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) says it has trained its members on the ease of doing business in the construction industry.

President of the NIQS, Mr Obafemi Onashile, stated this at  a two-day workshop organised by the institute in Abuja with the theme, ‘Construction Contracts Best Practices’.

He said the workshop was an intensive training programme focused on both building and engineering forms of contract in the construction industry.

Onashile urged operators in the construction industry to adopt JCT 2011 form of construction to address the challenges in construction practices.

He said in the past few decades, the construction industry had not been developing due to obsolescent methods and procedures of operation in the industry.

“The JCT 2011 form of construction has been in existence since time immemorial. But Nigeria is still using the JCT 1963 mode,” Onashile said.

“In the United Kingdom, it has been reversed severally; in 1998, 2005, 2011 and even in 2016.  Nigeria must not be left behind. In order to benchmark our industry to international standard, the construction industry must upgrade to the JCT 2011 of the world best practice,” Onashile said.
