Super Falcons rekindle rivalry with Black Queens at WAFU Cup

Uchenna Kanu

Two power houses in African women football, the Super Falcons of Nigeria and the Black Queens of Ghana will rekindle their existing rivalry on today as they meet in the semi-finals of the ongoing WAFU Women’s Cup in Cote d’Ivoire.

Going by their scintillating performances in the group stage which saw them scoring a whopping 22 goals in three matches, the reigning African champions are highly favoured to progress to the finals at the expense of their perennial rivals.

It will be sweet revenge for the Falcons, if they win because the Black Queens got the better of them to reach the finals.

Both teams avoided each other at the Women Africa Cup of Nations hosted by Ghana towards the end of last year, as the host nation headed Group A and the Cup holders headed Group B.

The Black Queens fell by the way side at group stage as the Falcons successfully defended their title. Without doubt, the Queens are sure to pay the most attention to USA -based student Uchenna Grace Kanu, who has increased her tournament goal haul to nine, after scoring one of the two goals in the defeat of Mali on Tuesday evening.

The other semi final match is between host nation Cote d’Ivoire and Mali.
