State education ministries tasked on school sports

He specifically said states where the ministries of education are yet to take over the administration and supervision of school sports to immediately adopt the National Policy on Sports Development in Nigeria which insists that school sports be the responsibility of federal and state ministries of education.
Mallam Mohammed who spoke after the Annual General Meeting of the School Sports Federation in Awka, Anambra State, said the basis for the establishment of NSSF was to emphasise the educational values of school sports.
According to him, since established in 1976 under the auspices of the federal ministry of education, each chapter operates under the ministry of education to organize and administer sports at both primary and secondary schools.
“The basis for the establishment of School Sports Federation of Nigeria is to provide a forum for the integration of youths from various ethnic groups in Nigeria, to use sports as an integral aspect of education to stimulate learning, unearth sporting talents at early age, and redirect the excessive energy of school boys and girls to a productive outcome through sports.
“It is also aimed at fostering unity among schools, inculcate the intrinsic value of sportsmanship, team work, determination, discipline and fair play among others in the youths,” Mohammed stated.
