Sponsors of Calabar Marathon promise yearly event

The sponsors of the just concluded 1st Calabar 10km marathon race, Universal Youth Fellowship, an arm of the Brotherhood of the Cross and Star, have said they hope to be bankrolling the event every year with increasing prize money.

International chairman of the group, Archbishop Tom Inyang-Akpan confirmed this at the end of the event at the UJ Esuene Stadium Calabar where over 80 athletes from across the country participated.


He said from next year the star prize money will increase to half a million Naira against N200,000 each for winners in the male and female categories.

The competition ended yesterday with the current national champion in 10,000 metres, Sadjo Ismael, emerging the winner in the male category with the time of 32.19.38 minutes.

A Customs official, Adamu Shehu Muazu who came all the way from Plateau State came second to win N100,000

Florence Olude Fadekemi also came first in the female category clocking 39.15.74 to win star prize of N200,000.

Sadjo Ismael who is from Cross River State said, “I feel good winning this event because I trained for it. I have been training for a month for this event.

“I was at the Okpekpe International 10km race and came third. I was also at the national trials in Abuja two weeks ago and I am the current national champion of 10km marathon.”

Athletes who placed third in both categories took home N50,000 just as those who ended from fourth to tenth place got N10,000 for their efforts.
