Spiritualist accused of extorting N4m from woman

A self-acclaimed spiritualist has been arraigned before a magistrate’s court sitting in Wuse Zone 2 over extortion.
The suspect, James Olelewe, alongside Nnaji Isaac, Chibuike Nnaji, Alexander Festus, Vivian Chinedu, Goodluck Ihechi Nnaji and Joan Chinedu, now at large, are said to have committed an offence contrary to Sections 97,322 and 294 of the Penal Code.
The prosecutor, A.S. Oyeyemi, told the court that on January 21, one Mariam Oluwayemi Lawal, reported to the deputy inspector-general of police that early on May 2014, the suspects conspired and deceitfully collected the sum of N4 million from her on the pretense that they were going to exorcise a spirit of deadly sickness that had been ravaging her body, having taken her to their shrine in Jabi, Abuja.
He told the court that the suspects threatened the victim, after making her to swear that she would never reveal to anyone whatever they told her.
If she did, they told her that she was going to die.
“The suspect threatened her that if she revealed whatever they told her to do, she could vomit blood and die and with that threat of death, the suspect extorted the sum of N4m from the complainant,” the prosecutor said.
The suspects, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Magistrate Samuel Idhiarhi,  granted each of the accused persons bail in the sum of N1m and two sureties in the like sum and adjourned the case to July 18 for hearing.
