Soyinka to Buhari: Don’t sign Yerima’s bill on child marriage into law

In a statement issued as part of activities marking the 22nd anniversary of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election, Soyinka expressed regret that the version of Child Rights Bill sponsored Senator Chris Anyanwu was not given similar attention as the one sponsored by Yerima.
Soyinka said after he read the two versions submitted by both Yerima and Anyanwu, it struck him that all that Yerima’s bill did was to empower “the clique of paedophiles.”
“All you need do is ‘marry’ even a six-year old under any local laws, and do whatever you want with her. Through marriage, she is already an ‘adult’. Her ‘defiler’ is now fully protected by this law. She is not. The current bill is the ancient story of locking the stable door after the horse has bolted. End of story? Yerima and his fellow perverts are having the last laugh,” the Nobel laureate said.
“President Buhari – and here I make my first imposition on his presidency – should never place his assent on such a nefarious distraction. Its implications doom the victim to afflictions that churn the stomach even to think of the human toll,” Soyinka urged.
The elder statesman also chastised the 7th National Assembly for passing 47 bills in less than one hour, towards the end of their session, saying such development deserved mention in the Guinness Book of World Record.
