SON intercepts N500m worth of substandard roofing sheets

The Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has seized galvanized roofing sheets and aluminium coils worth about N500million in Owerri and Okigwe, Imo State.

This, the organization said, is in furtherance of the onslaught on the sale and manufacture of substandard roofing sheets in the country.

Speaking on the raid of warehouses at the two locations operated by Prossy Nigeria Limited, the Director General SON, Osita Aboloma Esq. represented by Dele Omolawon, the enforcement team leader revealed that on the spot tests on the galvanized roofing sheets showed that they do not meet the requirements of the relevant Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS).

A statement made available to our correspondent indicated that the intercepted galvanized roofing sheets failed to meet the minimum value standard prescribed in the NIS.

SON added that the impounded coils used for the manufacturing of galvanized roofing sheets showed a non-conformance and falls below minimum requirements

The DG stressed his resolve to rid the nation of substandard products with particular focus on roofing sheets sector due to safety concerns and economic losses being experienced by unsuspecting consumers of the products.

The Team leader said the exercise was part of a nationwide surveillance program to locate and mop up substandard roofing sheets to ensure that only good quality roofing sheets that meet the minimum requirements of the Nigeria Industrial Standards are displayed in the open markets or stocked in warehouses.

Meanwhile, SON has said it is adopting 10  America Petroleum Institute (API) standards as part of the federal government’s efforts to boost its oil and gas sector.

This was disclosed by the Director General/ Chief Executive, Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), Osita Aboloma Esq., during a joint Technical Committee (TC) meeting on Oil and Gas/Petroleum and Petro Chemicals convened in Lagos recently.
