The Sokoto State Government is planning to introduce an initiative to boost production of popular red goats.

Disclosing government’s plan concerning the red goats, the state Commissioner for Animal Health and Fisheries, Professor Abdulkadir Junaid said, “Sokoto red goats are getting extinct somehow because people consume it a lot but the level of replacement is very low.”

He, however, said the state government was set to boost its production.

“We intend to buy a large number of these animals and distribute them to widows in 244 wards in the state.

“We will give each of them  five goats, alongside feeds, and in two years, she can get twice of it,’’ he added.

He noted that the scheme would not only increase the red goat population but empower it’s beneficiaries.

“Our target is 10 people in each of the 244 wards across the 23 local government areas of Sokoto. And by the time you do that you have empowered them on a small scale business,” he said.

He said the ministry was planning to go into the development of pastures.

“We are planning to develop pastures we can commercialise and make money for the government. The farmers will be happy too,” he said.
