Shippers Council urges fruit farmers to export to Europe, US

The Nigerian Shippers Council has identified air freight as viable export solution for agricultural producers of perishable goods in the insurgency ravaged North-East.

Speaking at a seminar in Yola, the council’s Director of Inland Transport Services, A.N. Makinde, said producers of vegetables, fruits, flowers and dairy products could take advantage of air  transport to export their commodities to European markets.

Makinde said countries like Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania had seized the advantages of the air transportation sector to export perishable agricultural products to Europe and America.

In his remark, the North East Zonal Coordinator of the Council, Samson Iliya Makama said farmers suffered huge losses due to poor storage and packaging facility, poor market structure, poor marketing information and under-utilization of international cargo freight facilities, and expressed optimism that the seminar would address the problems.
