The National Emergency Management Agency yesterday said 150, 000 persons were displaced by the recent flood in Bayelsa State.
This is even as all schools in the state have been shut to prevent loss of lives to the incident.
NEMA Coordinator, Emergency Operation Centre E, Yakubu Suleiman, told journalists yesterday that several homes, farmlands, schools, hospitals and churches were submerged in communities across the eight local government areas of the state.
He said: “We have cleared some portions of lands for the IDPs at Biseni and we have mounted some tents at Egbebiri Community all in Sagbama local government. We have carried an assessment, the ravaging flood has so far affected and displaced no fewer than 150, 000 persons and the number keeps growing because the water is rising on a daily bases.
“Several communities have been submerged, markets, schools, hospitals and churches are already under the water. We have cleared some portions of lands for the IDPs at Biseni and we have mounted some tents at Egbebiri Community all in Sagbama local government.”
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Daniel Iworiso-Markson, said yesterday that the government had directed immediate closure of all schools in the state to avoid loss of lives to flooding.
