- …As Pillars battle Katsina Utd in north-west derby
Week 15 matches of the Nigeria Professional Football League, NPFL, will hold today at venues across the country. The matches are expected to throw up some fireworks as well as effect some changes at the top of the table.
Hot on the heels of current leaders Lobi Stars who are on 27 points are Plateau United and Rivers who are aiming to climb to the top of the table, if they secure victories in their matches.
While Rivers United on 24 points play host to inform Lobi Stars of Makurdi at the Yakubu Gowon stadium in Port-Harcourt, Plateau United on 25 points will be the guest of Sunshine Stars in Akure.
Defeat for Lobi Stars will mean either Plateau United or Rivers will move to the top. However, if both Plateau United and Rivers obtain victories, it is Plateau United who will return to the top of the table.
Therefore, to remain on top, Lobi Stars must beat Rivers United to render Plateau United’s victory over Sunshine Stars inconsequential.
Lobi Stars lead Plateau United by two points so if both win, the table at the top will remain unchanged.
However, Rivers United will ascend to the top for the first time in the ongoing campaign if they can pick the maximum points and Plateau United fall in Akure.
Another mouth-watering fixture is the north-west derby between resurgent Kano Pillars and Katsina United at the Muhammadu Dikko stadium in Katsina.
All eyes will be on two Kano Pillars legends, Gambo Mohammed and Rabiu Ali who will be up against each other in this particular encounter.
Gambo who moved to Katsina United from Kano Pillars at the start of the season is expected to lead the attack for the ‘chanji boys’ against his former club.
In Umuahia, Abia Warriors who lost their first ever oriental derby to Heartland last weekend will host IfeanyiUbah who have lost 6 matches away from home while Adamawa United who have depended heavily on home advantage to garner points will welcome a Wikki Tourist team who have won only one match away from home.
Another oriental derby will hold in Aba where CAF Confederation Cup campaigners, Enyimba FC will host Heartland, Akwa United will trade tackles with struggling Kwara United in Uyo while Jigawa Stars visit MFM at the Agege township stadium in Lagos.
And after disappointing outings in the Confederation Cup, Enugu Rangers under Coach Salisu Yusuf will visit Warri in search of the maximum points against Wolves just as Nasarawa United will be the guest of high flying Dakkada in Uyo.
