The police in Cross River State have rescued two women from kidnappers’ dens in Calabar, the state capital.
One of the victims, Bosede Martins Anam, wife of the founder and general overseer of God’s Empowerment Ministry, was rescued at Ekpiri Ikot Eyo Edem in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state, while Effanganwan Orok Bassey Edem who was kidnapped from her house No 9 Ibang Amanso Estate in Akpabuyo Local Government Area of the state was also rescued.
Anam was reportedly kidnapped when she came back from church and was accosted by seven armed men.
A source, who gave his name simply as Archibong said, “Within one week, we recorded two incidents of kidnapping and they took their victims to the creeks in the area.”
He said the armed men drove her (Anam) to a bush and handed her over to another group who took custody of her and demanded for N20m ransom.
He said the Anti-cultism and Kidnapping Squad of the police in the state was contacted and they immediately stormed the place, about 30km from their office in Calabar, and arrested one of the principal suspects called Ubong Friday Abriham aka Mopol.
“This principal suspect took the police to the spot where the victim was rescued after heavy fire exchange between the kidnappers and the security operatives,” he added.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the police in the state, Irene Ugbo said, “the new commissioner, Austin Agbonlahor, came with high spirit to work and shortly after the meeting with various commanders, the Anti-cultism and Kidnapping Squad recorded that fit; it is great.”
