The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), yesterday, declared as inconclusive the Ajeromi/Ifelodun Federal Constituency election conducted on February 23, 2019.
INEC, therefore, fixed Saturday, April 27, 2019, for the conduct of a supplementary election.
The declaration was made at the Federal Constituency Collation Centre in Ajeromi/Ifelodun Local Government Area office of INEC during a meeting with leaders of political parties, candidates and their agents.
The declaration was in compliance with the order of the Federal High Court sitting in Kubwa, Abuja, on March 7, 2019, compelling INEC to declare the result.
Spokesman of INEC, Mr. Femi Akinbiyi, at the end of the meeting, said the election became inconclusive in view of the margin of lead principle where no candidate emerged clear winner as a result of cancellation of the election in 71 polling units.
Daily Trust reports that the cancellations were as a result of violence and over-voting in the affected areas.
Incumbent Member, Rita Orji of PDP, filed the suit in Abuja seeking to be declared winner of the election.
Hon. Rita claimed to have defeated her arch-rival, Hon. Kolawole Taiwo of the APC.
Mr. Akinbiyi disclosed that the supplementary election would hold in 71 polling units and 18 voting points with a total number of 43,660 registered voters.
