The House of Representatives on Tuesday faulted the suspension of the management of the Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund, alleging that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, acted outside the law.
Adopting a motion by Leke Abejide, the house alleged that Ngige acted unilaterally and flouted the law to remove the management of the NSITF.
The house resolved to investigate the issue.
Abejide said Ngige lacked the power to suspend the management of the NSITF since there was a board that never met to take any decision on the fate of the management.
The lawmaker argued that only the Secretary to the Government of the Federation has the power to issue the letter of suspension.
He said members of the NSITF management were variously and collectively appointed the president who also approved a laid down procedure for removal of executives of government parastatals.
The house set up an ad-hoc committee chaired by Mariam Onuoha (APC, Imo) to investigate what it called “the procedural breaches of the presidential directive.”
Meanwhile, the management board of the NSITF, after its emergency meeting later yesterday, directed the acting executive members of the Fund to take charge immediately as directed by President Muhammadu Buhari.
