Rangers defeat Kwara United to go top of NPFL Group A

It was another commanding display by players of Rangers International FC, as they defended stoutly in the second half to run away with a 2-1 victory over Kwara United in a re-scheduled match day 6 NPFL fixture played at the Kwara State Sports Complex.

Ifeanyi George and Godwin Aguda were the heroes of the day for the ‘Flying Antelopes’ as their efforts on 23 and 27 minutes set the tone for a glorious first victory on the road for the 2016 champions.

Pascal Seka and Aguda came close to increasing the lead on two other occasions but goalkeeper, Oremade Olawale was alive to his duties to keep a respectable score line going into the break.

The host started the second stanza with much vigor and tenacity upfront but Rangers back line ably marshaled by ‘Home Boy’, Isiaka Oladuntoye, stood their ground to ward off early raids.

On 66 minutes, Ebenezer Odeyemi, reduced the deficit as he pounced on a defense splitting pass from substitute, Tijani Adamu to score and gave hope for a likely upturning of the result which never came.

Coach Olugbenga Ogunbote said after the encounter, “We give God all the glory for this first victory on the road. I equally commend my players for their doggedness and determination shown during the match while also thanking the government of Enugu state as well as management and supporters of the club for their belief in what we are doing. It was not an easy match as our opponent came all out in the second half but we showed maturity to contain them.”

He further said, “Our target at the start of the season is on cause as we aim for a top three finish and finish well at the end of the season top six play-off.”

With the victory, Rangers have climbed to the summit of group A log with 24 points from 11 matches, while Kwara remain 8th on table with 18 points from 14 games played so far.
