The Nigerian Prisons Service (NPS) in Abia State has rounded off a week of activities to mark its 2017 Unity for Success Security Week with an appeal to parents, traditional rulers, churches and Imams to investigate sudden acquisition of wealth by their children or members.
Abia State Controller of Prisons, Mr Sylvester Ayoka, who made the appeal yesterday at Okpara Auditorium to mark the end of the security week, said the society must discourage acts that prompt people into crime, stressing that celebration of those who illicitly enrich themselves must be discouraged.
Presenting a public lecture earlier, the guest lecturer, Ezeocha Godwin, said corruption gave room to economic downturn and increase in crime rate.
He added, “The prisons are saddled with the influx of convicted and awaiting trial personers and the facilities in the prisons are overstretched. First offenders are put together with hardened criminals who now indoctrinate these first offenders into hardened criminals, thereby making prisons’ good intentions of reformation of inmates very difficult.”
