Determined to prevent post-harvest losses for ginger farmers in the country, the Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement And Livelihood Improvement Support Project, (APPEALS) has organized a three-day technology demonstration exercise for ginger farmers’ cooperative societies.

The exercise, which took place in Kafanchan, Kwoi and Kagarko, also featured a demonstration of ginger washing and slicing machines and dryers.

Addressing the farmers, the Kaduna State Project Coordinator, Dr Yahaya Aminu, described the machines as a breakthrough in technology that would enhance the processing of ginger, reduce losses and add value.

He attributed poor crop management, poor harvest management and poor quality management as the major factors that lead to post-harvest loss and affect export potential.

He appealed to all participants to pay adequate attention to the demonstration exercise to minimize losses and get corresponding value for their produce.

Also presenting an overview of post-harvest losses, Engineer  Abdulhakeem Lawal of Ahmadu Bello University,  Zaria lamented that the losses are often incurred  due to degradation in both quality and quantity from harvest to final utilization.

He said the losses were always in the nutrients or calorific value, acceptability and edibility in terms of quality and amount in terms of quantity.

Engineer Lawal said that the essence of the exercise was to ensure that the farmers have maximum benefits from their produce.
