The Pyxera Global with support from Rockefeller foundation under the yieldwise project has commissioned the first tomato aggregation centre in Kano State.
This is expected to, among other things, reduce loss of tomato after harvest and also to serve as a link between the farmers and buyers.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony at Garun Malam Local Government Area of the state, state coordinator Pyxera Global, Mr. Lekan Tobi, stated that the centre is established in an area where accessing perishable produce, especially tomato directly from farmers by prospective buyers will be easy.
According to him, about 3000 farmers will be serving the centre, which will be operated based on sustainable processes that will ensure ownership when the project winds off.
He stressed that the centre would also provide good inputs, seedlings and other improved techniques that would be shown to the farmers for adoption.
Speaking on behalf of the farmers Malam Shu’aibu Samawa, said the establishment of the centre was a great achievement in the history of tomato farming, not only in Kano, but the country as a whole.
