As part of strategies to curb political thuggery and violence in Kano, the state police command has started engaging stakeholders at local government level with intention of addressing the menace ahead of the 2019 general elections.
The command had earlier held similar meeting with the leaders of various political parties in the state where politicians were tasked on responsible politicking devoid of any form of violence.
Speaking at the roundtable stakeholders’ meeting in Fagge local government area, the state Commissioner of Police, Malam Rabi’u Yusuf identified the need for synergy between security agencies and the public to be able to contend the menace of political thuggery known in local parlance as ‘Daba’.
Represented by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Malam Abubakar A. Shika, the CP urged parents and other political stakeholders to show high sense of responsibility in the ongoing campaign against political violence.
Also speaking at the event, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Magaji Musa Majia said the meeting was aimed at disabusing the minds of the youths from political violence.
“One of the problems we have here in Kano is political thuggery that is why we are embarking on sensitization of all the stakeholders to help sensitise the youth do away with the menace,” he said, emphasing that the command would not hesitate to arrest any political leader encouraging violence in any part of the state.
Participants at the meeting, including traditional and religious leaders, identified pervasive drug culture as the major reinforcing factor fueling political thuggery and other criminal activities in the state, and called on other relevant agencies to cooperate with police to discourage youth against drug abuse.
