The Metro Area Command of the FCT police has raided black spots around Churchgate and Coscharis in the Central Business District, Abuja, and arrested 15 persons suspected of carrying out attacks on residents in the area.
The Metro Area Commander, ACP Nuruddeen Sabo, who spoke with our reporter, yesterday, said the raid was carried out at about 10:30pm on Saturday.
He said the suspects were arrested and exhibits such as cutlasses, knives and axes were recovered from them.
He added that some shacks in the vicinity of the area of operation were demolished as part of efforts to rid the area of hoodlums who lurked there and in the surrounding bushes and come out to snatch bags, phones and attack unsuspecting residents.
Sabo said the FCT police was concerned about complaints by members of the public that they were attacked by hoodlums at some black spots in the city and assured that the raids would be sustained while other tactics would also be employed to make the city safer for everybody.
He also said a lunatic who loitered around Churchgate and Coscharis Junction and threw stones at passing vehicles had been relocated out of the city.
“The man was arrested but there was nothing we could do about him once we discovered that he was mentally unstable. The only thing we did was to relocate him out of the city,” he said.
He assured members of the public that patrol and surveillance activities in the city centre have been improved upon as more patrol vans with officers and men of the police have been stationed at strategic positions.
Sabo said the suspects would be charged to court as soon has investigation was concluded.
