Police arraign man over N2.3m diesel theft

A 33-year-old man, Oladeji Babatunde, was yesterday arraigned before an Ikeja magistrate court, Lagos, for allegedly stealing diesel worth N2.3 million.

The police prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police Peter Nwagwu, told the court that Babatunde committed the offence with some other persons on August 12, 2019, at the Oshodi area of Lagos State.

Nwagwu said that the defendant stole the diesel, belonging to the complainant, Mr Folorunsho Amodu.

“The complainant discovered that his diesel had been stolen. After investigations were made, the defendant, who lives around the neighbourhood, was alleged to have stolen the diesel,” the prosecutor said.

Babatunde pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge of stealing and conspiracy levelled against him.

Chief Magistrate (Mrs) Y. O. Aje-Afunwa admitted the defendant to a bail of N1.3m, with two sureties in like sum.

Aje-Afunwa ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State government.

The magistrate adjourned the case till November 12, 2019 for mention.
