Based on overall airport experience as determined by voters in its 2014 Airport Survey, Port Harcourt International Airport, Nigeria (PHC) was voted 6th, Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, Nigeria (ABV) 7th while the Murtala Muhammed International Airport Lagos, Nigeria (LOS) ranked 10th among the top 10 worst airports in Africa in 2014. Khartoum International Airport, Sudan (KRT) was rated the worst airport in Africa.
Kinshasa N’djili International Airport, Democratic Republic of the Congo (FIH) was rated second worst while Tripoli International Airport, Libya (TIP) was voted the 3rd worst airport in Africa in 2014.
For the survey, voters were asked to judge facilities in Africa’s airports in four categories: comfort, convenience, cleanliness and customer service. The voters narrated stories as they relate to unfortunate airport experiences across the continent.
From dirty floors and bathrooms to the regular request for bribes, travelers were unimpressed with the airports that made it onto this year’s Worst Airports in Africa list.
Other complaints revolved around lack of air conditioning, general navigational chaos, limited yet expensive restaurant options and questionably-effective security processes at these airports.
The results pointed to the view that Africa has a reputation for having some of the worst airports in the world.
However, airports in Africa aren’t quite as bad as they seem. Some countries are making effort to improve air travel, like South Africa where three of its airports were rated consecutively the best among 5 African airports in 2014.
Johannesburg O.R. Tambo International Airport was rated best in Africa closely followed by Cape Town International Airport, and Durban King Shaka International Airport third best airport out of the five that were rated best in Africa.
Meanwhile, in other rankings, Pakistan’s Islamabad Benazir Bhutto airport was crowned the worst airport in the world in 2014.
There were no surprises when it came to naming the best airport in the world, with Singapore’s Changi International taking the title it has held every year since the survey began 18 years ago.
