Onnoghen: Lawyers boycott courts in Plateau

The members of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Plateau state on Tuesday boycotted the courts in protest over the suspension of Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Onnoghen.

It will be recalled that the national leadership of NBA had given a directive to lawyers to boycott court sittings to demonstrate what it described as an illegal suspension of Onnoghen.

Our correspondent who visited Federal High Court sitting in Jos reported that a sitting on political matter was on session when the letter from the NBA was brought to the court, which later prompted the adjournment of the case.

Our correspondent also noticed high compliance of the directive by the lawyers when he visited the Plateau State High Courts in West of Mines and Museum and National Industrial Court sitting in Jos.

Daily Trust reports that some monitoring team set up by the NBA were at the courts to ensure that the lawyers comply with the directive.

Daily Trust observed that some litigants that were already in courts also left disappointed when they learnt that their cases were suspended as a result of the directive by NBA.

Speaking with Daily Trust on phone, the Chairman, Plateau State chapter of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Barr Bon Shalyuun said he was satisfied with the level of compliance by the lawyers.

He said, “The responses I have gotten from the monitoring teams that we have sent to courts have shown that there was a high level of compliance by the lawyers.

“When we also learnt that court was in session in Federal High Court we sent, our monitoring team and the sitting was suspended,” he said.

Barr Shayluun said his monitoring team would also be in court tomorrow to ensure that all the lawyers complied with the directive.

One of the litigants, Ahmad Ibrahim, who was at Federal High Court said he was dissatisfied with the decision taken by the lawyers to boycott the courts over Onnoghen.
