Only 40 percent of former commissioners in Kano state will return to their positions in the second term of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, Daily Trust has learnt.

A reliable source close to the governor, who craved for anonymity, confided in Daily Trust that 60 percent of the immediate-past commissioners would not return to government in the second tenure of the governor.

According to the source, most of the commissioners would be dropped for their poor performances during the last tenure of Governor Ganduje.

He said, “So far, 100 are jostling for the slots of commissioner. These people are from different backgrounds. Some of the candidates are from the camp of the former governor, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, other from the side of former Deputy Governor, Professor Hafiz Abubakar and some from the camp of former Commissioner of Land and Survey, Architecture Aminu Dabo.”

He, however, said Governor Ganduje was marking his time in order to make best choice for the state, noting that the governor had laid down criteria for the selection of the new set of commissioners.

“The governor has made it mandatory that the next set of his commissioners are going to emerge based on their track records, performance, absolute loyalty, commitment, knowledge and intellectual capacity.

“Any candidate that cannot meet these qualities should just forget it because this time around, the governor is very serious about quality of the people he is going to work with than their personality,” said the source.

The source added that the governor would also give priority to women, as more women would be appointed commissioners this time around.

He said the recent appointment of 11 women as permanent secretaries was a pointer that more women would be appointed commissioners in the second term of Ganduje-led administration.

He said some notable women who excelled in various field of human endeavours had been pencilled down for appointment of commissioners.

The source added that the governor had during one of the meetings held recently in respect of appointment of commissioners, promised that he would carry everybody along.
