Observers divided over credibility of Kano LG polls

The state Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) had last Sunday declared that the All Progressives Congress (APC) won all the 44 chairmanship and 484 councillorship positions contested for at the poll.
While members of the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria (FOSIECON), a group comprising chairmen of the electoral body led by one Justice A. F. Adeyinka and Dr. Hannatu Usman Biniyat said the election was credible, 10 civil society organisations described the election as a ‘stage-managed one’.
Hours after the state electoral body announced the result of the election on Sunday, the Justice Adeyinka led body issued a statement observing that the election was well organised.
“We observed timely and adequate supply of materials to all polling units and there was impressive turnout of voters in all areas visited. Security arrangement in general was adequate and security personnel were visibly present and active in the areas visited,” the forum in a statement which was made available to newsmen at the headquarters of KANSIEC in Kano said.
The forum commended the Kano state electoral body for the successful conduct of the election and urged voters to sustain the tempo in subsequent elections.
However accredited Civil Society Observer group in a communiqué issued yesterday described the election as stage-managed and a rape on democracy.
The group in the communiqué signed by 10 civil society organisations urged Kano state governor, Engineer Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to as a matter of urgency order the cancellation of the election.
“Our team observed that the election was characterised by massive rigging, ballot paper stuffing and ballot box snatching by hoodlums and political thugs especially in Fagge, Tarauni, Madobi, Nasarawa, Gwale, Kibiya and Municipal local government areas,” the group said.
