The president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Chris Isiguzo, yesterday called on President Muhammadu Buhari to overhaul the nation’s security architecture to tackle the current security challenges.
Isiguzo, who was speaking in Lokoja during the grand finale of the 2019 press week organized by the Kogi State Council of the NUJ, urged the president to ensure protection of lives and property of citizens.
He condemned the recent killing of a promising journalist and corps member serving with Channels Television, Precious Owolabi, during a protest by members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria in Abuja.
“We have plethora of security issues across the country; if you go to the northwest, you see armed banditry terrorising people; go to the Southwest, kidnappers are terrorising people; if you go to central Nigeria the activities of herdsmen is there disturbing and terrorising the people; in the Southeast and Southsouth, we have ethnic militias causing problem and this is a big problem on our hands”, he said.
Earlier, Chairman of the Kogi State Council of the NUJ, Adeiza Momoh-Jimoh, urged journalists in the state to imbibe the principles objectivity, truthfulness, fairness and balance in their reportage, especially in the build up to the forthcoming gubernatorial election in the state.
