The acting chairperson of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Amina Bala Zakari, yesterday, called on the 8th
National Assembly to expedite legislative works on the proposed amendments to the Electoral Act.
Zakari said that despite the encomiums poured on the conduct of the recent general elections, failure of the 7th Assembly to pass the proposed amendments affected the process.
The INEC chairperson spoke at a post 2015 multi-stakeholders conference on electoral reform in Abuja, organised by the National Democratic Institute.
She was represented by a national commissioner, Ambassador Lawrence Nwuruku, at the gathering, stressing the need to improve the electoral process in the country.
“Let me take this opportunity to call on all lawmakers to make haste to consider the issue of the reform of our electoral process. We must ensure that all amendments are undertaken in good time and in accordance with global best practices.”
