The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for synergy with the International Lawyers Assisting Workers (ILAW) against anti-labour and workers policies of government and the private sector in the country.
NLC President Ayuba Wabba made the call while addressing a group of leading lawyers in the country and members of the American Solidarity Centre at the inauguration of ILAW in Nigeria on Tuesday in Abuja.
Wabba said ILAW will provide an opportunity for lawyers in the country to interface directly with ILO, and labour lawyers around the world, adding that “the whole essence of working in synergy is to continue to provide for the interest of workers, and defend human rights.”
Also, the FCT chapter of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has welcomed the network, stating that the development would assist workers to defend themselves.
Barrister Emmanuel Adedeyi who represented the NBA said, “As an association of lawyers in Nigeria, we want to be part of this network.
“This platform will assist in sharing information, to know how it is done in other countries. It will be an insight on how to handle workers issues in other places limited to what is available to you.”
Meanwhile, chairman of the ILAW board, Jeffery Vogt said the body would always stand for and protect the rights of workers and trade unions across the globe and in Nigeria.
She added that ILAW will be a transformational change for the better of the solidarity movement and workers.
