Nigeria’s BASAs now 91 as Cape Verde perfects agreement

The Federal Government has opened discussions with Cape Verde to begin air transport relationship in line with existing Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between the two countries.

With Cape Verde finalizing agreement on flight operations, Daily Trust reports that Nigeria now has over 91 BASAs signed with countries for flight operations.

At the moment, no fewer than 32 of the BASAs are operational.

Minister of State for Aviation Sen. Hadi Sirika made the disclosure after a meeting with Cape Verde representatives on the sideline of the just concluded First ICAO/UNWTO Ministerial Conference on Tourism and Air Transport in Africa, held in Sal, Cape Verde.

The minister on his Twitter handle @hadisirika also disclosed that Cape Verde will soon open its embassy in Abuja as part of strengthening of bilateral relations.

He said, “We have just concluded a meeting with Cape Verde authorities and they have signified interest to start flight operations into Nigeria. Cape Verde is willing to exercise their right in the Bilateral Air Service Agreement and hopefully to seek a Nigeria airline that will reciprocate through flight operations into Cape Verde.

“They will start operations into Nigeria very soon and we hope that Nigerian airlines will take the opportunity too, as they have already said they are looking forward to a Nigerian airline to partner with.”

It was learnt that at the meeting, Cape Verde agreed to fulfill all necessary commitments and conditionalities for commencement of flight operations.

Cape Verde is expected to start operations with its national carrier, Cabo Verde Airlines anytime this year.

A source privy to the discussions said the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority(NCAA) will embark on inspection trip to Cape Verde to audit their facilities before final approval would be given for them to commence operations into Nigeria.
