Nigeria Taekwondo Int’l Open: Team Nigeria win 3 gold medals

The Day 1 of the ongoing Nigeria International Open in Abuja has seen the host, Team Nigeria scooping three gold medals.

The 2014 Commonwealth gold medallist, Josephine Esuku and Africa silver medallist, Chinazum Nwosu won gold in the women’s -46kg and -53kg while national champion, Sunday Onofe won gold in the men’s -87kg.

Benin Republic’s Boni Biso won gold after beating Abdulfathi Sanusi 23-15 in the men’s -58kg while Romaric Kiki settled for silver losing to Nigeria’s Sunday Onofe 14-7 in the men’s -87kg.

Abdullateef Olawale defeated Saudi Arabia’s Saddat Biso to win gold in the men’s -54kg for Team Lagos while Shukurat Omobisola and Mariam Adegoke won bronze medals in the women’s -46kg and -53kg.

Cote d’Ivoire won one gold medal, while Niger Republic garnered two silver and four bronze medals to place third and fourth on the medals table.

Meanwhile, former African champion, Uche Chukwumerije said he is satisfied with the organisation of the tournament adding that it will help the athletes grow.

Chukwumerije said that the event has exposed grassroots athletes and competing against foreigners will boost their psyche ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.
