All seems not to be well in the Nigeria Para Powerlifting Federation (NPPF) as powerlifters have vowed not to report to camp ahead of the Powerlifting World Cup to be staged in Abuja
The championship which doubles as qualifiers for the 2020 Olympics will hold between February 5 and February 7, 2020.
Daily Trust gathered that the powerlifters are not happy with the federation’s choice of Abuja as their training camp.
According to informed sources, the athletes prefer Lagos to Abuja because all the equipment they need for training are in Lagos state.
It was also gathered that the athletes are furious over the sudden sack of their coach, Aare Feyisetan who is said to have been with the team for more than 11 years.
In a bid to force the athletes to abandon the camp in Lagos, it is said some of the equipment in Lagos were removed at night and taken to Abuja.
One of the athletes Paul Kehinde who spoke to Daily Trust confirmed that the powerlifters had refused to go to the camp in Abuja.
“I’m currently in Lagos camp and I will be here till the World Cup where I hope to represent my country and qualify for the Olympics.
“The federation wanted us to come to Abuja to camp and it was called by the federation president. I have been in camp even before the camp was officially opened.
“Some equipment have been moved to Abuja but I still have my bench that I am training with,” he said.
However, efforts to reach the President, Nigeria Para-powerlifting Federation, Mrs. Queen Uboh proved abortive as she didn’t respond to calls or text messages sent to her phone.
