Nigeria partners with Thai gemstone producers

The Ministry Mines and Steel Development Ministry has expressed its readiness to collaborate with the Thai Gems Stone producers to organise the 3rd edition of the African Gems and Jewelry exhibition and seminar (AGJES) expected to take place in August 2019.

The minister Abubakar Bawa Bwari said the collaboration was for the growth of the sector and to specifically attract potential investors to Nigerian gemstones and jewelers in line with the economic diversification policy of the Federal Government.


The minister stated this at the recently concluded 63rd edition of the Gems & Jewelry Fair, held at Thani in Bangkok, Thailand.

The minister, who was represented by the Director, Artisanal and Small Scale Miners (ASM) of the ministry, Mr. Patrick Ojeka, said Nigeria is endowed with many precious stones from various states and that a strong partnership between both countries will foster the networks needed to develop significant relationships within the industry.


In a statement, the ministry revealed that it has provided for potential investors three years tax waiver, mining equipment tariff free, enabling environment, and repatriation of their profit.

In his response, the Deputy Director General, Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), Ministry of Commerce, Thailand, Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengit pledged to mobilise stakeholders in the sector from his country to attend the AGJES Show in August and provide adequate publicity for the success of the upcoming event.
